Gravel calculator
Estimate cubic yards, cubic metres, US short tons and metric tonnes for a rectangular area.
How the estimate works
Volume = length × width × depth. Add the ordering allowance and convert cubic feet to cubic yards. Weight = ordering cubic yards × entered density.
Worked example
A 10 × 10 ft area filled 4 in deep needs about 1.23 cubic yards before allowance. At 1.4 US short tons per cubic yard, that is about 1.73 short tons.
Before you order
- The default density is an illustrative estimate, not a verified specification for your material. Ask your supplier for the right value.
- A US short ton is 2,000 lb; a metric tonne is 1,000 kg. The result labels keep them separate.
- Depth is a geometric layer depth. If material will be compacted, confirm loose-order quantity and allowance with your supplier.
Common questions
Why does the weight vary by material?
Density changes with stone type, grading, moisture and packing. Enter the supplier’s density for a better estimate.
Are short tons and tonnes the same?
No. One US short ton is approximately 0.907185 metric tonnes.
